Video: Chaos and Violence After the Relegation of Coritiba

The firms and fans of Coritiba could not take the relegation at home and in the year of its centenary. They invaded the pitch and beat anyone on their way. There is a lot of information, some are rumors, about injured people. This is what I found:

- According to Folha de S. Paulo, 4 injured people;
-One police officer was shot outside the stadium;
-One of Fluminense’s security men broke an arm;
-Buses and a Shopping Center were thrashed;
-Rocks were thrown at the house of Cuca, Fluminense’s coach. He is from Curitiba and his wife and daughter live in the city.

My Opinion

Coritiba should be banned from national competitions for a few years. It was a matter of luck that no one died. And to spread violence because of a game is pure stupidity. It shows how low human beings can go.

Wrapping Up the Second Division

The second division of Brasileirao officially came to an end today. Only one thing remained to be seen: the last club to be relegated. And sadly, Juventude was the one. Juventude and Fortaleza, two traditional sides that played the first division until 07, will be in third division in 2010. Final standings are:

Champion: Vasco
Promoted to first division: Vasco, Guarani, Ceara, Atletico-GO
Relegated to third division: Juventude, Fortaleza, Campinense, ABC
Top Strikers: Rafael Coelho (Figueirense), Marcelo Nicacio (Fortaleza), Elton (Vasco) – 17 goals.
Best Attendance: 81.904 people ( Vasco 2 – 1 Juventude)
Worst Attendance: 5 people (Duque de Caxias 4 – 1 Ponte Preta)

With one round left in the second division of Brasileirao, the 3 tickets left for a place in next year’s first division were taken. The clubs promoted are Guarani, Ceara and Atletico- GO. The promotions happened after Figueirense, the only club with chances left, lost at home, which made the other results just a detail.

The return of Guarani is the one this writer expected the most. The 1978 Brazilian champion is full of history and tradition, represented by players such as Careca, Amoroso and Luizao. The last time the club played in the first division was 5 years ago. And 2009 was a crazy year for Guarani. In the state championship, the club was relegated to the second division, but coach Vadao, the guy who first introduced Kaka to the world, reconstructed the team. It was the second promotion in a row of Guarani at the national stage, as last year it was in the third division. Besides Vadao, the credit for the recovery goes to its president Leonel Almeida Martins de Oliveira. Oliveira had two other terms at Guarani – in one, the club lift the 78 trophy; in the other, the club was the 1986 runner-up

Ceara will ensure the Brazilian northeast some first division football next year. With Sport already relegated, and Nautico close to that as well, the gigantic region in Brazil was close to have just side next year (Vitoria). This would’ve been sad. The 1994 Copa do Brasil runner-up has not played in the first division since 1993.

Atletico-GO is the least traditional side of the three, having played the first division only 4 times, the last one being in 1986. The club, however, is the one with less chances of being relegated next year. Why? There’s some people pouring money in the club. Last year, the club took the title of the third division, and, as in the case of Guarani, it is experiencing the second promotion in a row. So next year, there will be 3 Atleticos playing each other: Atletico Mineiro (MG), Atletico Paranaense (PR) and Atletico Goianiense (GO). Besides that, the club will take add to the first division another goalie who scores goals. You may have seen Marcio in action. Rogerio Ceni won’t be alone.

Vasco Wins the Second Division

After granting a spot in next year’s first division of Brazilian football, Vasco da Gama finished the combo and took home the dubious title of champion of the second division. Wearing a commemorative jersey (not very tasteful, if I may say), the club cameback to beat America-RN at a packed Maracana. Elson and Alex Teixeira, the same from the U20 Brazilian team, scored the goals. Congratulations, Vasco!

The second division has two more rounds, and another 3 clubs will move to the first division.

Vasco is Back to First Division!

Vasco da Gama is back from hell. The Brazilian giant granted its return to the first division of Campeonato Brasileiro less than a year after being relegated. Vasco was another giant that, as it’s been happening a lot lately, felt the results of the poor administrations that control most of Brazilian football. In order to reconstruct a side with so much history (Romario, Edmundo, Bebeto and many others) and titles (1 Copa Libertadores, 4 Brazilian titles), the club got rid of the nasty figure of Eurico Miranda, the ex-president who damaged the club in many levels. Vasco turned into president its biggest idol, Roberto Dinamite. And from there, the steps for bringing the giant to life were getting started.

Coach Dorival Junior was hired to conduct a modest group of players. And he did so perfectly. Add to that the fact that Vasco, ironically, became the lowest and the last chance in the career of midfielder Carlos Alberto. Not all the time he took that responsibility of being Vasco’s main name, but when he did so he was very useful. And the result was the victory this Saturday against Juventude.

The 2-1 in a Maracana packed with more than 80 thousand fans was the final chapter of the suffering. And it was a happy one. Next year, Vasco will be among its true rivals, the giants of Brazilian football. And for that, the club will need even more work, so that the second division becomes a unique moment in the history of this club. Congratulations, Vasco!

Video: Goalie Scores from a Free-Kick

In the second division of Campeonato Brasileiro, goalie Marcio was the main name of the match involving the two sides from Goiania. His team, Atletico-GO, beat Vila Nova 2-1. And he scored the first goal with a beautiful free-kick. Atletico-GO is on its way to first division. With the victory, the club seats in third with 47 points.

“Didn’t You See it ?” – The Ugliest Handball Goal in History

When Maradona, or even Messi, used their hands to score, the referees had a few excuses. The hands were close to the head, the pace was too fast, other players were in front of him, the linesman did not help…

However, what happened in the match Ceara – Parana for the second division of Campeonato Brasileiro is hard to defend. Parana’s forward Wellington Silva slowly and shamelessly stretched his arm all the way to score against the home team. Referee Charles Hebert ignored lineswoman Ticiana Falcão and gave the goal to Parana. Maybe, he was just puzzled by the absurdity of the goal, and decided to make it legal.

The truth is that Ceara is fighting for a promotion to first division, and the points of this match are already being missed. The fight before the half-time says everything. Wasting no time, the people responsible by referees in Brazil announced Herbet will not work this season any longer.

The Pain of a Broken Leg

The image below is from the match between my beloved São José against Atletico Sorocaba for the second division of Sao Paulo’s state championship. Defender Ferron from São José tackled Júlio César from Atletico and the result you can see below. The match was stopped for 26 minutes, the time spent for the ambulance to take him to the hospital and return to the stadium. I was listening to this match on the radio, and the commentator said that everybody knew the player had a broken leg from the first second. According to him, the sound of the bone breaking could be heard from very far. Yes, he was red carded. Yes, the midfielder will be out of play for a long time. And the final score was 3-3.
