Brasileiro: Palmeiras and Sao Paulo Share the Top

The 33rd round of Brasileirao put on the top Palmeiras and Sao Paulo, creator (Muricy Ramalho) versus creation (Sao Paulo). Palmeiras leads because of the goal difference, three more than Sao Paulo.

On the weekend, Palmeiras played the derby against Corinthians whereas Sao Paulo played Barueri. In both games, Corinthians and Barueri could’ve done something to mess up the campaigns of the leaders. Corinthians played better, Ronaldo scored twice and goalie Marcos was ejected in the first-half. But Palmeiras played like a team conducted by Muricy Ramalho. In two set-pieces in the second-half, defenders Danilo and Mauricio tied twice with headers. Even thought it was a two goal draw, being the way it was makes the result taste like victory. Sao Paulo, on the other hand, reached the same amount of points of Palmeiras. But Barueri played better throughout the match. The lonely goal by Jorge Wagner and the pale performance of the entire squad sends questions to whether Sao Paulo will overcome the club of its ex-coach.

Title still a dream for some, and a nightmare for others

Atletico-MG and Flamengo are still ver much alive for the title. Atletico visited Goias and played a game that ca be summarized as: easy/failure/no, we can make it/dramatic victory. The team jumped ahead with two goals, one by midfielder Ricardinho and one by forward Eder Luis. Before the first-half was over, the home team tied. Julio Cesar, one of the best right-backs of the league, got a powerful long range. Minutes later, Leandro Euzebio counted on the mistake of goalie Carini. In the second-half, Atletico was awarded a penalty, which was taken by Diego Tardelli (his 18th in the league). After that, Atletico held on to the victory that keeps the club 2 points away from the leader.

Flamengo received Santos in a packed Maracana with 80 thousand fans. With just 7 minutes, Adriano scored his 17th in the season, the only goal of the match. The man of the match, however, was goalie Bruno. He denied two penalties to midfielder Paulo Henrique, one of the names to fail with Brazil in the U20 World Cup. The next round will be thrilling as Atletico and Flamengo face each other at the Mineirao.

If Atletico and Flamengo are still alive, the dreams of Inter and Cruzeiro to lift the trophy seems to have reached an end. The two sides lost at home for the two sides from Rio fighting relegation.

With one minute into the match, Inter watched Juninho take a free-kick and open the score board. But the defender, who is the one of the most powerful shots in Brazil theses days (horrible defender though), wasn’t the name of the match. This title goes to goalie Jefferson. He saved Bota, even after forward Andre Lima was ejected. The referee also helped by ignoring a penalty that should’ve been awarded to Inter.

This is where Jonathan and Wellington Paulista started to score their goals. Before the first-half was over, Wellington Paulista had time to miss a penalty. In the second-half, however, Fluminense had an unthinkable comeback. Gum, the defender who always scores, started everything. But the name of the match was forward Fred. Playing against his ex-club, he scored twice and gave the victory to Flu. He did not celebrate in respect for the club he suports, but Flu fans could not care less: Flu no longer seats in the last position of the table and will struggle to avoid the second division.

The top of Brasileiro looks like this: Palmeiras 58, Sao Paulo 58, Atletico-MG 56, Flamengo 54, Internacional 52, Cruzeiro 51.

Relegation: Sport Suffers…

The round was terrible for Sport, as every rival in the bottom won. Sport played the Recife derby against Nautico. And Nautico always stayed ahead of the game, with goals by Bruno Mineiro, Carlinhos and Irenio. Sport scored through Vandinho and Wilson.

Santo Andre received Gremio, the side with poorest away campaign in the league. In the first-half, Nunes, again, scored for Santo Andre. Coach Paulo Autuori did all the necessary changes to have Gremio back on the track in the final half. He did not count on his own defender, Rafael Marques. With 2 minutes into the action, he scored an amazing own goal, heading like a true striker. Gremio was defeated one more time.

The two Curitiba sides keep taking turns to see who will be closer to the relegation zone. And Atletico-PR now is the one in this situation. The club lost 2-0 against Avai, goals by Rogelio and William. The latter scored the most beautiful goal of the weekend with a plastic bicycle-kick shot.

Brasileiro: Palmeiras Gains New Hope

Until the 32nd started, things looked dull for Palmeiras. There was enormous pressure and the fear that the team had just lost the Brasileiro. But after the last mid-week round of Brasileirao, things changed again. Palmeiras won and all direct rivals, but one, lost precious points. With that, the hopes of Palmeiras fans have been renewed.

On Thursday, Palmeiras received Goias pressured by the victory of Sao Paulo the day before. After the first-half, the fans were worried. Palmeiras did not play well and Goias did not score for simple details. Then, in the second-half, Obina decided to shine. The folkloric forward pulled and hat-trick. Not satisfied with it, he gave an assist for Deyvid Sacconi using his heel. A brilliant touch of the name of the entire round. The 4-0 was an statement of a team who is far from being dead. The fans have a lot to celebrate, after 4 matches of suffering.

The only rival who did not let Palmeiras go was Sao Paulo. The current champs received Inter in the match considered by the Brazilian press as the “final” of the round. This was so because both Sao Paulo and Inter are after Palmeiras and the title. Coach Mario Sergio carved an offensive attitude in the players of Inter and the visitors were more dangerous the entire match. Bosco, the reserve goalie who replaced Rogerio Ceni, saved Sao Paulo. And the home team wasn’t lucky only in its defensive lines. In the attack, Sao Paulo shot on goal twice, both with forward Washington. And one of them ended in the back of the net of Inter. Sao Paulo is still on the chase of Palmeiras (2 points behind), while Inter is stuck 5 points behind the leader. It was the first defeat of Mario Sergio ahead of Inter.

Atletico-MG and Flamengo, two sides that seemed on fire until the round started, failed against relatively easier rivals.

Flamengo visited Barueri without Petkovic, and missed its main playmaker. The club from Rio suffered in the hands of the locals, who scored through Val Baiano (nice goal by the way), and Everton (who received an assist from Val Baiano). Fla lost after 11 matches and fell to sixth in the table, having its chances of title reduced greatly.

Atletico-MG did even worse. It visited Fluminense, last side in the table, and had a unspeakable performance (not in a good way). Flu scored in the first-half from the spot with Fred, and, before the first minute of the second-half, scored the second through Conca. The Argentinean is truly one of the few players from Flu honoring the club. Minutes later, Diego Tardelli scored his 17th goal in the league (top scorer), but it wasn’t enough. Eder Luis had the chance to tie, but he shot the ball in the skies. Atletico was punished by the terrible performance with seeing Palmeiras increase the difference between the two clubs.

New force

It was clear that Cruzeiro was going to fight for a spot in the Libertadores. However, no one thought the club was going to be in 5th at this point. And Cruzeiro reached that position after a dramatic second-half at home against Santo Andre. With 13 minutes, Gilbero served Guerron to open the score. But Santo Andre did not make it easier. Four minutes later, Nunes scored a beautiful goal and tied the match. The, Santo Andre came-back with Junior Dutra. It took 10 minutes for Cruzeiro to tie again. Gilberto served the youngster Eliandro. The match seemed to be going to a breath taking draw. But Cruzeiro had one final gasp. And Thiago Ribeiro, with 2 minutes into the stoppage time, took Cruzeiro to the lead and to the 5th place in the table.

The top of Brasileirao now looks like this: Palmeiras 57, Sao Paulo 55, Atletico-MG 53, Inter 52, Cruzeiro 51, Flamengo 51.

Rio de Janeiro Breathes

if on the top two sides from Sao Paulo rule, in the bottom the two sides from Rio are giving signs that they do not want to go to second-division. Fluminense beat Atletico, whereas Botafogo beat a direct rival in the bottom four.

Bota received Nautico at home and was awarded by the referee a penalty that did not exist. Juninho took it and scored the only goal of the match.

If the sides from Sao Paulo and Rio showed force (or some reaction), the sides from Recife had a poor round. Nautico lost. And Sport just tied 1-1 at home against Coritiba (Fabiano for Sport and Ariel for Coritiba scored the goals.

Brasileiro: Tight Race Between 3 Contenders

In the 23rd round of the Brasileirao, the race for the title came down to what is promising to be a tight one. Palmeiras (44 points), Inter (43) and Sao Paulo (40) won their matches and offered no chance for each other to relax.

On the match that marked the return of Vagner Love, Palmeiras received Barueri at home. But it did not have an easy time. Still trying to adjust to the absence of Pierre (who had a ankle injury during a practice session), Palmeiras was bombarded by Barueri in the first-half. The lack of a good striker took the chance away of Barueri of jumping ahead. In the second-half, Muricy Ramalho made a few changes and that blocked the appetite of Barueri. The match had a mild feeling when Cleiton Xavier served Diego Souza to score the first. Thing did not change and Obina left the bench to get a penalty that did not exist from the referee. Vagner Love took it and scored. Barueri swallowed the goals and kept trying, which resulted, with 4 minutes left, in the goal by Leandro Castan. It was the victory of champion.

Inter visited Avai, one of the greatest positive surprises of the league. But Avai had no chance to beat one of the best Brazilian sides. Inter controlled Avai with a fast and precise game whose moments of flair were a glimpse of what this team can do. In the 34th mark, defender Fabiano Eller scored on his return to Inter after failed spells in Spain and at Santos. Following the goal, his defensive buddy Indio was red carded. Things were to get hard? No, Inter kept a superior game and attitude in the entire second-half. The result was a goal by Magrao on 80th mark. Minutes later, Bolivar was red carded. But Inter did seem to feel that as well. It was another victory of a champion.

Sao Paulo traveled to Belo Horizonte to meet Cruzeiro for the first time after the clash in the Libertadores that resulted with Cruzeiro’s qualification. Sao Paulo took over the midfield, but did not have a creative mind to arrange its offensive power. This resulted in Cruzeiro giving heat to Rogerio Ceni and the defensive midfielder Richarlysson. In the end of the first-half, neither of them could stop the promising Diego Renan from scoring for the locals. In the second-half, coach Ricardo Gomes pushed the “luck button”. With 19 minutes, he sent 20 year-old Marlos. On his first touch on the ball, the midfielder tied the game. With 35 minutes, the lighting stroke again. Gomes sent forward Borges to the match. On his first touch on the ball, he scored the second for Sao Paulo. Indeed, a victory of a champion.

Favorite Score: 2-1

Besides Corinthians 2 -1 Santos (match played on Wednesday), Palmeiras 2 -1 Barueri and Cruzeiro 1 -2 Sao Paulo, the round had another 2 matches that ended with the 2-1 score. Both of them important in the fight against relegation.

On Saturday, two sides in the bottom 4 played in Recife, as Sport received Botafogo. With only 6 minutes into the match, the score already marked Sport 2-0 Botafogo – it seemed as if Botafogo’s defense was just enjoying the extended Independence weekend. Fabiano and Wilson had no problems to score. In the second-half, defender Juninho, who is horrible but has the most powerful shot in Brazil today, scored from a free-kick. The result was terrible for Botafogo as it remains with only 23 points. Sport jumped to 20.

In Santo Andre, the local team received the fading side of Atletico-MG. Santo Andre was having an important victory until the 88th mark with a goal by Wanderley. But Atletico decided to show it is not dead yet, and Eder Luis tied. And before the match was over, Diego Tardelli may have heard that Dunga will may need some new forwards for Wednesday. With 2 minutes into the stoppage time, the striker scored with a header his 11th goal in the league, which makes him one of the top scorers. By staying with 25 points, Santo Andre joined the bottom 4 again. This defeat was typical of those looking for relegation.

Almost 2-1…

In Porto Alegre, Gremio and Vitoria regretted not scoring one more goal. The 1-1 was bad for both sides. For Gremio, losing 2 points at home is always something bitter. For Vitoria, letting Gremio tie with 4 minutes for the end of the match also hurt. Neto Berola scored in the first-half, but Jonas, again, scored a beautiful goal for Gremio.

In Rio, the 1-1 was terrible for the home team. Fluminense received Nautico in a direct battle against relegation, and failed. Conca, one of the few that plays well for Fluminense, scored first, but Carlinhos Bala scored the goal that removed Nautico from the relegation zone. Fluminense remains as the last team, and it is faded to second division – a karma that returned after Fluminense was promoted from the third to the first division by CBF in 2000.

In Goiania, Goias would’ve loved to see a 2-1 in the score board, but Coritiba and its forward Ariel did not let it happen. Ariel scored in the first-half, Goias came back with goals by Felipe and Leo Lima, but with minutes left Ariel had a glimpse of a genius. With a bicycle-kick, he tied the game again. The 2-2 was terrible for Goias as it watched the leaders to get some distance.

Bed time

Atletico-PR 0 – 0 Flamengo. Two teams without high expectations. No goal. best moment was Atletico’s coach, Antonio Lopes, fighting with the linesman. Ok, Flamengo is still able to say it never lost at Arena da Baixada, but wake me up…

Colors of the Week in the Brasileiro: Black and White

The 13th round of Campeonato Brasileiro was all about black and white. Atletico-MG and Corinthians were the ones who benefited the most from the midweek round. The two clubs won at home by 2-1 and watched direct rivals losing important points.

In Belo Horizonte, Atletico beat Fluminense, who had the 5th debut of coach Renato Gaucho. Serginho and Diego Tardelli scored, but the night was of Aranha, the goalie of Atletico. With the victory, Atletico increased its lead in the tournament by reaching 28 points (against 25 of Palmeiras).

In Sao Paulo, Corinthians reached the top 4 for the first time after beating the good side of Vitoria. Dentinho and Jean scored for the locals. Righ back Apodi, one of the main names of Vitoria, scored the visitor’s lonely goal.

The round was good for both sides because Palmeiras, Inter, Barueri and Vitoria lost points.

Palmeiras visited Goias and lost 2-1. After Diego Souza scored another brilliant goal, the locals came back with a great help of the referee.

In Porto Alegre, Inter opened a 2-0 lead against Sao Paulo with two offside goals by Alecssandro. In the second-half, however, the current champs tied with goals by Hernanes and Jean. Goalie Lauro from Inter also denied a penalty took by Washington.

In Rio, Barueri visited Flamengo and tied in one goal. Adriano was again eclipsed by teammate Emerson, who scored for Fla, and Barueri’s Val Baiano, the top striker of the league. The result caused the firing of Cuca, Flamengo’s coach.

In the bottom portion of the table, blue was the main color.

Cruzeiro started its recovery after losing Copa Libertadores by beating Santo Andre 2-0. The goals were by Kleber and the youngster Diego Renan (Remember you heard about him here first)

Avai received Gremio and won by the minimal score after Ferdinando took a powerful free-kick.

Santos also scored only one goal to beat a rival in the bottom portion of the table. Neymar left the bench to pocket the 3 points in the 4th debut of Luxemburgo ahead of Santos.

Finally, 2 draws were terrible for 4 clubs fighting relegation. With a terrible participation of the referee, Nautico and Botafogo tied in 2 goals. Gilmar scored the two goals of Nautico, and Juninho, one more time with his powerful shots, was fundamental for Botafogo scoring twice. When he does not score, he ensures a good rebound will happen.

Sport and Coritiba tied in one goal, goals by Dutra and Marcelinho Paraiba.

Brasileiro: Sao Paulo Looses the Rope; Ronaldo Protagonist Again

Four regional derbies took place for the 12th round of Campeonato Brasileiro.

In the derby of desperation, Sao Paulo and Santos battled to see who had the less horrifying side. And Sao Paulo won 2-1, with two goals by striker Washington.

In the Curitiba derby, Atletico-PR and Coritiba also fought to see who has the worst team. With both sides showing obvious weaknesses, the final result could be no different than the nil draw.

The derby in Rio also had one side suffocated by the shadows of relegation. Botafogo took on Flamengo to do something different, but the truth is that things looked the same. Defender Juninho got another powerful free-kick, which Alessandro used the rebound to score. Adriano and Emerson, a man who keeps scoring despite not being trusted, scored for Fla. Renato gave finals numbers. The 2-2 changed very little the situation of the two clubs in the table.

The Grenal of the centenary, the match of the Porto Alegre derby that celebrated 100 years of this rivalry, brought more confusing thoughts for Inter. Inter lost 2-1, after Nilmar scored first. Gremio came through midfielder Souza (beautiful free-kick) and forward Maxi Lopes. For 6 matches Gremio did not win in the derby. And now it won not only in the celebratory derby, but also beats Inter after it lost Copa do Brasil and Recopa. Coach Tite is on the edge.

The main clubs with the most surprising campaigns, however, fought outside the regional derbies.

1) Palmeiras and Santo Andre, two sides with surprisingly good campaigns, played in Sao Paulo. And interim coach Jorginho took Palmeiras to the second spot in the table with a simple 1-0, goal by Diego Souza. The midfielder is having his best sequence ever at Palmeiras.

2)Vitoria and Atletico-MG, sides with even more surprising campaigns, tied in zero goals in Bahia. It was the first 2 points dropped by Vitoria at home in the league. Atletico-MG remains as the leader.

3)Finally, the other great surprise of the league is Barueri. This time the victim was Nautico, who lost 4-0. The man of the night was one more time Val Baiano. He scored 4 goals and has a total of 8, which puts him as the top scorer so far.

4)Now, time for clubs that are surprises in a bad way. Sport, the side who lifted 2008 Copa do Brasil and dreamed of Copa Libertadores, is fighting relegation. This time, the team managed to lose 3-1 at home for Avai, one of the weakest in the tournament. After being fired from Atletico-MG, coach Emerson Leao brought things down at Sport. Has Leao reached the end of his career?

5)Finally, Fluminense, another side many expected much, was humiliated at home 4-1 by Goias. Goias came back with nice shots from outside the box. Felipe and Iarley scored again.

Ronaldo Again…

was the protagonist of a Corinthians match. For those who expected to see a battle between the number 9 and Cruzeiro’s Kleber, it was frustrating. All because Ronaldo took all the attention in the match against the club that introduced him to national and international soccer. He gave an assist to Jorge Henrique, missed a penalty and scored a goal in the 2-1 victory over Cruzeiro. Corinthians is in 5th now.

Brasileiro: Atletico-MG reaches the Top; Coaches Get Fired

After the 10th round of Campeonato Brasileiro, Atletico-MG returned to the top after the 3-0 victory in the Belo Horizonte derby. Besides the pathetic red card by Cruzeiro’s Ze Carlos, the men of the match were veteran Junior and forward Eder Luis – even though in his goal goalie Andrey gave a big help. It doesn’t matter that Cruzeiro had a reserve side because of the final of Copa Libertadores. Atletico ended a series of 12 matches, or 2 years, without any victories against the main rival. Had not won this match, Atletico was going to be part of the longest series without a victory in the derby.

Atletico MG had the help of the other Atletico, the one from Parana. Atletico-PR, one of the weakest sides in the league, received Inter, started losing the match, but came back to win 3-2. The man of the match was Marcinho, ex-Palmeiras and Cruzeiro. Coach Tite, from Inter, is about to receive the pink slip after the losses in Copa do Brasil and Recopa Sulamericana and because of the fact that people like Muricy Ramalho and Luxemburgo are in the market.

Coaches in the Market

The effect of such high profile coaches in the market had practical effects on the weekend. # coaches lost their jobs and more things are likely to happen.

Still with an interim coach, Palmeiras massacred Nautico 4-1 and caused the firing of Marcio Bittencourt, the coach who leaves Nautico without winning a single point. The relegation siren is ringing loud for the club from Recife. Geninho already replaced him.

Fluminense received Santo Andre and lost 1-0 with an own goal by Wellington Monteiro. The result? Carlos Alberto Parreira, 1994 World Champion, was fired. He left complaining a lot about the influence of Fluminense’s sponsor Unimed. Rumors point to Muricy Ramalho and Renato Gaucho.

Finally, Wagner Mancini from Santos did not resist. No one would after the humiliation against Vitoria. The 6 – 2 was the final blow. Forward Roger scored twice, and with 28 minutes the match was already 4-0. Vitoria is the only club to have victories in all matches at home in the league. Rumors point to Luxemburgo as the replacement of Mancini.

Talking about a coach who is just getting started, Ricardo Gomes and his Sao Paulo tied at home against Flamengo in a two goal match. Fierro opened the score for the visitors after a huge pass mistake of goalie Denis (who is a good talent, by the way). Sao Paulo tied with Borges. Then two penalties: Flamengo converted with Adriano and Sao Paulo with Jorge Wagner. The man of the match, however, was defender Miranda.

Other games

In non-job posts news, this is what happened on the weekend:

Barueri continues the surprising campaign and reached the 5th spot. This time the victim was Coritiba 3-1.

Avai and Botafogo both remain the relegation zone. On the weekend, Botafogo won 2-1. Defender Juninho scored again from a free-kick.

Gremio received Corinthians and scored 3 – 0 in the first half (goals by Alex Mineiro, Jonas and Rafael Marques). It is the first time Corinthians loses for 3 goals under coach Mano Menezes.

Finally, Sport beat Goias 1-0.

Campeonato Brasileiro: Surviving a Hang Over

The 9th round of Campeonato Brasileiro was all about surviving a bad hang over. And most did it.

After being eliminated at home from the semis of Copa Libertadores, Gremio honored its nickname of “immortal”. With 11 minutes, the two forwards from Argentina had scored 3 goals – Maxi Lopes (2) and Herrera (1). In the second-half, Herrera scored again. And the 4-1 made Gremio forget that it was playing a continental competition.

The red half of Porto Alegre also had to forget it lost at home the final of Copa do Brasil just a few days ago. And what a better solution than a match against a weak rival? Inter visited Nautico, missed a penalty with D’Alessandro, but had Nilmar. The forward scored twice in the 2-0 victory. And now Inter is back to the first spot.

The other club showing no signs of bad hang over after the elimination in the Copa Libertadores and departure of coach Vanderlei Luxemburgo is Palmeiras. Under interim Jorginho, the green team visited Avai and constructed a sound 3-0 victory. The man of the match was Obina, who after leaving Flamengo in bad terms due to poor football, has an impressive mark of 5 goals in 5 matches in the league. Avai now is the last in the table.

With all these clubs recovering, there’s one who is not recovered yet of the elimination in the Copa Libertadores and the departure of its coach. Sao Paulo visited Coritiba and, in another afternoon of horrendous football, lost 2-0. The beautiful goals by Marcos Aurelio and Ariel confirmed the worst beginning of tournament by the current champs since the league model was established in Brazil.

Barueri visited Santo Andre trying to survive the hang over fater the departure of striker Pedrao, who will play in the Middle East. The 1-1 wasn’t that great, given that Barueri left the top 4. However, Val Baiano, the man who replaced Pedrao, scored.

Talking about hang over, it is impossible not to mention Adriano. After missing the third practice session in a month, the forward wasn’t very useful in the 2-1 victory against Vitoria. The man of the match was midfielder Kleberson, in his first game after the Confederations Cup. he have an beautiful assist to Juan and conducted the midfield. Emerson, the less hyped forward, scored the other for Fla. Ibson, in his farewell match, had a penalty denied by goalie Viafara.

Cruzeiro, with its reserve side and a great hang over after qualifying to the final of Copa Libertadores, visited Goias. The home team won with another goal by Felipe, the top striker in the league with 7 goals. Not something Cruzeiro will waste too much thoughts on.

The one club that entered this round in good health and will end with a huge headache is Atletico-MG. In front of 50 thousand fans, the ex-leader tied in 1 goal with Botafogo, one of the weakest sides of the league. The beautiful free-kick by Juninho silenced Mineirao.
