Maurício Murad, sociologist and professor from UFRJ (Federal University of Rio de Janeiro), shows that in the past 10 years, 42 football fans were killed in Brazil in fights around or inside stadiums. The source of his ranking are media and police reports made between 1999 and 2008. In the past 5 years, death rates increased to 5.6 deaths a year (compared to 4.2 in the first 5 years). Between 2007 and 2008, there were 14 deaths – 7 per year.

He said when he started putting the ranking together, Brazil was in third, behind Italy and Argentina. In an interview to UOL, he says the main reason for this is that there was no proper reaction from politicians and law enforcement agencies.

Another scary data from the research is the increase in deaths caused by guns, instead of fights or falls. Many of these recent conflicts were arranged on social networks. Remember: this is the country organizing the 2014 World Cup.
