Ball used on EURO 2008 final sold for €10.000

Yep. € 10.000. The ball used on the match between Germany and Spain was auctioned by the Austrian newspaper Kronen Zeitung and Adidas. The money is going to Osterreichische Sportshilfe, to help the development of Athletics on the London Olympic games in 2012. Neat!

Vital day for group B. Germany desperately needed victory in order to join Croatia in the quarter-finals. Here are today’s results:

Poland 0 – 1 Croatia – with a perfect sweep through the first phase of EURO 2008, Croatia goes to the quarter-finals confident. Poland goes home. The Croatian goal was scored by #17 Ivan Klasnić.

Austria 0 – 1 Germany – a tense match with opportunities for both sides took Austria out of the competition today. Ballack scored an amazing goal on a free kick to give Germans hope and keep Deutschland alive.

Germany and Croatia are secure in the quarter-finals. Poland and Austria will go home and what the rest of the matches on their big screen televisions.

For those who missed it, here are the latest results for the past 3 days of Euro 2008. We are now into cut-throat phase as victory becomes vital for survival in the EURO championships. My predictions are all on the Netherlands.

Friday, June 13th. Group C matches.

Italy 1 – 1 Romania - I guess the Italian efforts did not pay off. Italy had a legitimate goal canceled and Buffon still managed to save a penalty from the Romanians. Football is sometimes not fair. Now Italy has the rope on their throat and depend on winning the next match against France and hoping for Romania to lose against Netherlands.

Netherlands 4 – 1 France – What an amazing match. France completely dominated by the Orange Machine! The Netherlands is playing amazing football. I haven’t seen that much energy, speed and skill in a long time. Now France also depends (just like Italy) on winning the next match and hoping for a victory of the Netherlands over Romania.

Saturday, June 14th – Group D matches.

Sweden 1 -2 Spain
Greece 0 – 1 Russia – last EURO champions are far from being what they once were…

Sunday, June 15th matched – Group A matches.

Switzerland 2 – 0 Portugal – Big Phil used this match to rest his players and give host Switzerland a chance to shine.

Turkey 3 – 2 Czech Republic – Against all odds (everyone was saying the Czechs were most likely to win the EURO this year), the Turkish men took victory away from the Czech Republic in one minute. Turkey is now into the quarter-finals as the Czech let the spot slip. Very well deserved.

What’s that? Germany took a beat by Croatia?
Here are today’s shorties:

Croatia 2 – 1 Germany – The Deutsche Man were dancing along Croatia’s song. Goals by Srna and Olić for the Croatians. Podolski gave a little hope to the Germans with another goal. Croatia is now secure int eh Quarter-Finals.

Austria 1 – 1 Poland – As Poland seemed to take victory home (with a goal from Guerreiro), host Austria equalized with Vastic on a last chance penalty.

Today’s shorties: Portugal keeps destroying. Turkey sucks at playing in the rain, luckily the 2nd half had a drier pitch.

Czech Republic 1 – 3 Portugal – Deco scored first, C. Ronaldo scored his first, gave a present to Quaresma. The Czechs put one in with Sionko.

Switzerland 1 – 2 Turkey – Yakin shook the net first for Switzerland. On a drier pitch, Turkey capitalized 2 with Turan and Şentürk.

Netherlands kicking Italy’s old behind.

What a nice match! When lots of people expected an equally competitive match, what was shown today in Berne was a dominant Netherlands over a weak Italy. Van Basten’s squad was fast, skillfull and effective. Donadoni’s was slow, with a lot of bad passes and poor play choices. From Van der Sar to Nilstelrooy, the Oranges played as one amazing machine, scoring 3 goals over the Azzurri and leaving the feeling Italy’s World Cup winning squad might be getting a bit old.

Is that possible? Maybe Luca Toni, Materazzi, Zambrotta and co. are getting a bit old (they average around 31 years old – except for Barzagli, everyone is close of passed the age of 30). The Azzurri definitely does not have the same speed and power they did in 2006. Today, the squad seemed heavy on the pitch, making horrible passes and choices. And… Italy’s defense was a joke!

So when you put older, not so well prepared dudes against highly motivated and physically well prepared young players, you get what we saw today. The Oranges has only a couple players around 30 years old: Nistelrooy, Van der Sar, and Ooijer – but the 3 are extremely well prepared, and seem to have no issues keeping up with the young ones (all born during the 80′s – Bronkhosrt, Sneijder, Kuyt, Van der Vaart, Boulahrouz, Jong, Mathijsen).

Fitness, however, was not the entire problem. Italy’s players were not positioned well and lacked creativity or simplicity on the plays created.

Azzurri – get smart, get fit and start playing. Today you just made me choose a squad to root for.
