Video: Chaos and Violence After the Relegation of Coritiba

The firms and fans of Coritiba could not take the relegation at home and in the year of its centenary. They invaded the pitch and beat anyone on their way. There is a lot of information, some are rumors, about injured people. This is what I found:

- According to Folha de S. Paulo, 4 injured people;
-One police officer was shot outside the stadium;
-One of Fluminense’s security men broke an arm;
-Buses and a Shopping Center were thrashed;
-Rocks were thrown at the house of Cuca, Fluminense’s coach. He is from Curitiba and his wife and daughter live in the city.

My Opinion

Coritiba should be banned from national competitions for a few years. It was a matter of luck that no one died. And to spread violence because of a game is pure stupidity. It shows how low human beings can go.

Copa do Brasil Has Its Final Ready

As it was expected, Corinthians and Inter eliminated Vasco and Coritiba. But it was far from being easy. After last week’s 1 goal draw in Rio, Corinthians played for a 0 draw at home. And this is exactly what happened. Vasco controlled the actions for most of the time. It had territory and it attacked more. Corinthians had a few chances here and there, but Ronaldo and his teammates were not inspired. No goals took place. And the final minutes of the match seemed endless for Corinthians fans. At the end, the home team got the result it needed. Vasco now will continue its unusual year in the second division.

At the Couto Pereira stadium, similar drama for the favorites Inter. Last week, Inter beat Coritiba 3-1 at home. The amount of beautiful plays in that game made even hard to think that Inter would rely on the fact that it could even lose 1-0 in the second leg. However, Inter did not have Nilmar and Kleber, both with the national team. Taison and D’Alessandro were not inspired. And above of all: Coritiba was brave. The home team controlled the game, forcing goalie Lauro to do at least onevery difficult save. With 30 minutes into the second-half, Ariel opened the score board. 8 minutes later, Bolivar was ejected. Things started to get pretty dull for Inter. Luckily, there was no more time left. Inter, indeed, relied on the advantage from the first game. Just like Corinthians.

The final will be the one that many predicted. It will put face to face two state champions with defeatless campaigns. And whoever wins it will ensure a great gift for the fans in the year of the two clubs centenaries. For Inter, this is another chance of lifting a trophy in 2009, the year of its centenary. For Corinthians, it is the chance of getting a ticket for the Copa Libertadores in 2010, year of its centenary.

Review of the Week – 2

The quarter finals of Copa do Brasil started with the promise of lots of goals. Ronaldo, Fred, Nilmar… There was a great amount of names. The star of the night, however, in the two most promising matches were the goalies and the post.

Corinthians 1 – 0 Fluminense: This was supposed to be a Ronaldo x Fred contest. The winner? Fluminense’s Fernando Henrique. True, the strange goalie saw Dentinho score and hit the post in the first 19 minutes. But after that, it was his match. Corinthians controlled the match, but was stopped by the goalie in a number of occasions.

Flamengo 0 – 0 Inter: In Rio, the participation of the goalies was even more decisive. Lauro and Bruno were, ironically, together in the mission of holding the zero in the score board. When it wasn’t possible to reach the ball, the post helped them. Fla hit it twice. Inter once. And the 0 draw was a victory for the two men wearing the number one. The final save of Bruno is symbolic of how hard they worked.

Ponte Preta 2 – 2 Coritiba: In the most ignored match of the quarter finals, the goalies suffered with deflections. This is how Coritiba and Ponte scored their first goals. Ponte, which is the surprise of this year’s competition, gained control in the second-half and came back. But, it allowed the visitors to tie with a few minutes left. Marcelinho Paraiba, again.

Life is Sweet

This is what Vasco fans must be thinking. The club faced Vitoria, the team that sent Vasco to the second division last year. And revenge is something to be tasted slowly. At the same stadium where Vasco fans cried last year, now they only had smiles. Vasco humiliated Vitoria with a 4-0, having absolute control of the match. Rodrigo Pimpao was the man of the match. And in the year which it is playing the second division, Vasco is very close to the semifinals in the competition that has a ticket for Copa Libertadores as a prize. Indeed, life is sweet.
