Group Stages are over. Half are out. Some very exciting matches.

Yesterday Juventus got a big upset by losing at home, 1-4, to Bayern München and is now out of the nockout stages. Bayern is in along with Bordeaux, who beat Maccabi Haifa FC 0-1. Real Madrid – or shall we say C. Ronaldo? did it’s job by winning 1-3 against Olympique de Marseille, and helped AC Milan qualify as well on group C (Milan tied Zürich 1-1 in Switzerland with a goal by Ronaldinho). C. Ronaldo’s goals were amazing. Here are yesterday’s results:

Today Barcelona played an incredible match and beat Dynamo Kiev 1 – 2 with goals from Xavi Hernández and Messi (a nice free kick). That put Barca at the top of group F and in the nockout stages along with Internazionale. Fiorentina beat Liverpool in England and qualified, along with Lyon on group E. Olympiacos beat Arsenal in Athens but both teams have qualified. Here are today’s results:

Who’s in?

Group A: Bordeaux, Bayern Munich
Group B: Manchester United, CSKA Moskva
Group C: Real Madrid, AC Milan
Group D: Chelsea, Porto
Group E: Fiorentina, Lyon
Group F: Barcelona, Internazionale
Group G: Sevilla, Stuttgart
Group H: Arsenal, Olympiacos

Big boys Liverpool and Juventus need better luck (or better football) next year.

With the end of his agreement with AC Milan approaching, David Beckham is set to return to LA Galaxy until the next transfer window opens, in January. The British man caused some furor in America with the Milan deal and made fans a bit mad by just leaving the team he decided to defend. So now that he apparently has no other option other than coming back to LA, I pose two questions: Do fans want him back? and does he want to be back?

Let’s take care of the first issue: fans. LA Galaxy did not want him out, the fans did not either (at least until the end of his contract). He managed to do so anyways. Not cool for the fans, very cool for him. And although it seemed like LA was doing better without Golden Balls, things currently do not look so bright for the Galaxy. The team stands last in the Western Standings with not a single victory whatsoever. Having stars like Becks could definitely bring some morale back in the squad, or ruin it. What will it be?

Now for the second issue, I strongly believe Beckham really does not want to come back and play in America. First, playing in Milan is just so much better (better football, better players, don’t even get me started), but most importantly, he has more visibility there and more chances of joining the English team. Capello is not fond of his football in America and has a better eye on him when he is playing in Europe. Honestly, I would too.

So there you go. One person, however, has made his love for “Becks-in-Milan” extremely well known: Adriano Galliani, Milan’s vice-president.

“The agreements with Galaxy are very clear. We have got what we wanted and hence we have David until the end of the season,” said Galliani. “Beckham has been an extremely important signing. We took him knowing that Gattuso was injured. I hope Beckham comes back to us but from now until the January transfer window he will definitely be in Los Angeles.”

It seems like whether people (or Becks) want it or not, LA is having Becks back.

It seems like the financial crisis is getting to the football world. Italian newspaper La Gazzetta dello Sport published today that AC Milan needs to cut 30% of the paycheck value. The team’s salary expenses range around 120 million euros per season and Berlusconi (Milan’s owner) needs to cut it to around 85 million. Tough job. Maybe not.

Kaká should be the aim of the cutting-cost-machine, as his salary alone represents around 9 million euros. Not only that but selling the Brazilian could bring a nice chunk of cash in. The last bid on AC Milan’s star was for 105 million euros from Manchester City, a value accepted by the club but denied by Kaká.

At the end of the season however, not only should Man City bid again, but Kaká should also be hearing from Real Madrid. The Spanish have shown deep interest in getting the player and I have to mention that playing for a club like Real Madrid is a lot more inviting than Manchester City (sorry Man City fans and citizens.. and Robinho).

Sponsorship probably hasn’t been easy on the pockets – for clubs and sponsors. Selling players had become a nice measure for cutting costs. Others who should also be gone are Dida and Emerson – owners of fat paychecks who have not been getting much play time.

Football is indeed all business after all.

We have to all agree that moving to LA Galaxy wasn’t the best move David Beckham has performed. The guy got all the pressure and sold all the jerseys, but when it came down to football, MLS is definitely not a good playing ground for someone like Becks. I guess no one will really bring the Cosmos era back (I was worng). It’s been 2 years, and Golden Balls has made enough money. Time to move on.

What was speculation last week, turned into truth. Adriado Galliani, AC Milan’s vice president, announced that Beckham will be playing with the Milanese until mid 2009. Blimey that’s good news! Not only will he keep the fit (LA Galaxy said goodbye to playoffs already), but he will also be playing on a highly competitive league, with a dense population of amazing footballers.

Well done!

If things don’t get messed up at home (Victoria is not too happy about moving back to Europe), Becks is on his way to improving his football, and maybe will return as a starter on Capello’s squad. Who knows?

And for AC Milan? They have got a nice deal all the way. Not only will they have Golden Balls at their disposal (who let’s face it, is a high class player and a very good professional) but the Beckham brand is worth a lot. Milan can take full advantage of all the package.

Good move Becks, good move.

I think this will be a new phase for Ronaldinho. If he gets motivated and in shape, he can surely come back as the world’s top player. And the buy was not expensive. At all. Only € 21 million. But I bet Ronaldinho’s salary won’t be going down at all…
