A Giant Suffers in Fourth Division

Santa Cruz, the traditional side of Pernambuco where Rivaldo started his career, is wounded to death. The club faced relegation three times in a row, from first division in 2006 to fourth and last division of Brazilian football in 2009. This Sunday, the suffering was extended even more. The club played at home against CSA to not be eliminated in the first round of the tournament. Also, it needed Central, playing away against Sergipe, to win. Central won. But Santa Cruz tied in 2 goals. Not only it was eliminated, but also it finished the group stage as the last club in its group. The only reason it wasn’t relegated is that it has no other lower division to be sent.
The saddest of all? Santa Cruz played in front of 30 thousand fans. Even sadder? Santa Cruz has the best average of fans in the 4 divisions of Brazilian football. While Atletico-MG, club seating in the second spot of first division, has an average of 35 thousand fans, Santa Cruz has an average of 38 thousand fans per game in the fourth division. Sad. Too sad. Be brave Santa.
