Capello and Owen: Chapter 1.
By Ana on Feb 8, 2008 in Football Business, Footballers
Fridays are perfect days for speculation. Today we open a new chapter in English football: Capello and the reason why he did not start Michael Owen. Come on folks, the guy is good looking, plays great football, but Capello kept him off. Why? Speculation is what we are here for today (after all, today is Friday). Capello has said he has nothing personal against him, and says he “should just carry on what he has been doing so far.” Which means that Owen has been doing a good job, but did not get a chance.
On the other hand, the Italian boss adds that “If he’s here it means he’s part of my plans like everyone else I picked,” which is also true. So therefore, I am lost.
The reason for my Friday wonderings is because the incredibly good looking Owen has been a major, uncontestable choice for the Three Lions in the past years. And it makes me wonder why would someone one earth go for Crouch over him (Capello took Crouch out of the bench on the match against Switzerland).
But then again, Capello claimed he opted for Crouch just to get to know his game better, whereas he already knows Owen’s capabilities very well. Which, once more, does make sense.
So there you go. This post is inconclusive and a mere expression of my internal conflicts.
