It was October of 2000. Brazil lay fourth in the qualifying world cup South American tournament and had just been eliminated by Cameroon in the Sydney world cup. The president of the Brazilian soccer confederation was going through replacements and an obvious choice surfaced. Luiz Felipe Scolari.
Having previously won two Libertadores cup, he was now employed in what most Brazilians consider the best organized football club in Brazil, Cruzeiro Esporte Clube.
Brazil brought in Scolari to save their reputation and he managed to turn the qualification campaign around, going one step further at the 2002 World Cup finals, leading Brazil to World Cup glory for a record fifth time by beating Germany 2 - 0 in the final.
Scolari’s international reputation now assured, he took over as national coach of Portugal in 2003 to prepare the country as hosts of Euro 2004. Building on the base of a strong Portuguese generation of young players, intermixed with the world class talent of Luis Figo, Scolari took Portugal to the final of Euro 2004 on the back of ecstatic home support only to end the run with underdogs Greece grinding out a 1 - 0 final victory to lift the trophy.
Scolari again took Portugal close in World Cup 2006 in Germany where they fell at the semi-final stage to eventual runners-up France.
And now the man is at Chelsea. Loved everywhere he worked, Felipao is already making Chelsea fans happy.
