Sad news today. Robert Enke, Hannover and Germany’s goalkeeper has been found dead in an underground train passage in Neustadt am Rübenberge, Germany. According to police, it appears the 32 year-old has committed suicide by train.
Enke hadn’t been playing a lot due to a mysterious infection. His last match with Hannover, however, was last weekend on a 2-2 tie with Hamburg.
Enke also had 8 caps for the German national team but hadn’t been called since September by coach Joachim Löw for the friendly matches against Chile and Ivory Coast, to be played on November 14th ands 18th. Löw, however, made it clear he wanted Robert to be part of the squad going to the World Cup in South Africa.
From The Guardian
“The victim is apparently national team goalkeeper Robert Enke from Hannover 96,” a media officer for the Niedersachsen police told Reuters. “The first police indications are that it was a suicide.”
The German FA (DFB) also issued a statement which read: “The German team has learned of the death of Robert Enke with great shock. National team coach Joachim Löw and manager Oliver Bierhoff said ‘we are all shocked, we are speechless’.”
Enke was born in 1977 and played for Carl Zeiss, Borussia Mönchengladbach, Benfica (1999-2002), Barcelona (2002-2003), Fenerbahçe (2003), Tenerife (2004) and Hannover 96 (since 2004)
He was married and lost his 2 year-old daughter in 2006, due to a heart problem.
Sad day for football.
