Italy’s goalkeeper, Gianluigi Buffon, is sure having a good week. Not only is he on the list of 2007 FIFA World Player of the Year, but he has also been named the Azzurri captain for the first time in his experienced career. The 2006 World Champion, has been with Italy for almost 10 years.

Buffon wore his gloves for Italy when he was only 19, subbing for an injured Gianluca Pagliuca during a 1998 FIFA World Cup play-off against Russia.

The captain post comes after Cannavaro’s injury, who is suspended for Italy’s UEFA EURO 2008™ Group B qualifier against Georgia.
