The Community Shield provided an entertaining introduction to the new season, with United and City going at each other for the entire 90 minutes.
But given the shrewd purchases made by both clubs over the summer I fancy them to continue their rivalry into a season long title race.
City showed rapid improvement last season thanks to the millions pumped into the club by billionaire owner Sheikh Mansour.
Their FA Cup win and third place finish was a sign they are to be taken seriusotl by the established elite in the Premier League.
The £38million signing of Sergio Aguero also symbolises City’s new-found appeal and lustre, their presence in the Champions League, as well as their cash, means they can attract virtually any player they want.I n fact if you want to bet on the Champions League City team to back to reach the latter stages, despite it being their debut in the competition.
Over on the red half of Manchester Sir Alex Ferguson has once again been cleverly regenerating his squad, with established older heads being replaced by eager youngsters.
The likes of Phil Jones and Ashley Young have both talent and potential, while the club’s youth Academy is doing its bit, producing the likes of Tom Cleverly, Fabio and Rafael. For a spell on Sunday Mancheser United’s team on the field had an average age of 22. Fergie is building for the present and the future.
Looking among the other title contenders I see too many weaknesses for them to launch a sustained title bid. Arsenal appear to be more concerned with selling players than buying. And without meaning to slate Alex Chamberlains immense potential, Wenger again seems to be buying young players ‘for the future’ without thinking about the here and now.
Chelsea have a new boss, Andres Villas-Boas, who will no doubt breathe new lif into the team. But once again for me they have an ageing sqaud with too man chinks in the armour to go all the way in the title race.
Liverpool have been mentioned again following a £100million splurge by the new owners in the past sx months.
However, I don’t feel the players are of the sufficient quality to win the title, certainly this season. They should have a much improved season though.
Therefore I can’t look beyond the two Manchester sides in the Premier League betting this season.
Which team will come out on top? Well only time will tell…..
