Clubs from Rio and Shame in Copa do Brasil

On Wednesday and Thursday, more matches for Copa do Brasil took place. To make things very confusing, some matches were for the first leg of the second round. Some were the second leg of the second round. And some team qualified for the round of 16 in one match – according to the 2 goal difference victory rule.
This week’s hall of shame goes to Botafogo. The club from Rio was eliminated at home by Americano. After repeating the 2-1 with a goal by midfielder Maicossuel, the club was kicked out in the penalties. The irony is that Maicossuel, the best player from Bota in 09, is the man who missed the penalty.
Another big club from Rio had a moment of shame. Fluminense visited Águia de Marabá in Belém for the first leg of the second round. Thanks to a goal by Fred, the defeat wasn’t worse for Fluminense. The 2-1 can be easily reverse in Rio, but this is a game that should not even happen. On top of that, Thiago Neves hitting the ballboy was added another ridiculous moment to his career.
Another traditional side to get a sour result was Atlético-MG. The side headed by coach Leao visited Guaratinguetá, club who has got relegated in the Sao Paulo state league. And the 2-2 could’ve been worse if the ref did not give the visitors a penalty that did not exist. For Atletico, the only good news was that Diego Tardelli scored another two. Now, the forward has 21 goals in 17 matches in 2009.
On the other hand, Corinthians and Vasco did what they’re supposed to: qualified for the round of 16 without the need of a second leg. Corinthians did a horrible game against Misto de Tres Lagoas, but also had the hand of the ref to get a decisive penalty. Vasco took on Central in Caruaru and won 3-0, with a great performance of Rodrigo Pimpão.
