We all know that bad refereeing in Brazil has no limits. Last weekend, the match between Corinthians and Botafogo added another example to the pile. Now, Blog do Birner started to compile that data proves that Brazilian football has a thing for yellow cards.

The blog is comparing the amount of cards given in Brazil and in the main European leagues. The results are stunning – specially when it is known that Brazil does not have a league as physical as other places. Brazil has an average of 6.6 yellows per game. Italy, the second, has 5. Besides Brazil and Italy, Birner (and his writer Leandro Iamin) is observing the amount of yellows in Germany, England, France, Spain, Turkey, Holland and Portugal. In all countries, but Italy, the blog followed the first two rounds. And the last two rounds of Campeonato Brasileiro were used for the comparison. The collection of this data is expected to last for every round of the season.

The results of the last weekend were:

Italy
Last weekend’s Round:
50 yellows, 0 reds, 1 red after 2 yellows

England:
26 yellows, 0 reds, 0 reds after 2 yellows

The round before:
29 yellows, 0 reds, 0 reds after 2 yellows

Germany
Last weekend’s Round:
39 yellows, 1 red, 1 red after 2 yellows

The round before:
24 yellows, 0 reds, 0 reds after 2 yellows

Turkey
Last weekend’s Round:

The round before:
45 yellows, 0 reds, 1 red after 2 yellows

France

The round before:
37 yellows, 0 red, 1 red after 2 yellows

Portugal
Last weekend’s Round (one match did not happen):

The round before:

Brazil
Last weekend’s Round:
But when C. Ronaldo gets on cocky land, I feel like taking away all his merits and achievements. Today he pretty much told France’s L’Equipe that no one else deserves France Football’s Ballo D’Or but him (he’s a simple guy, you know…). He says he has had a stable year and won all major competitions with Manchester: Premiership and Champions League. On top of that he reminds us that he also scored more goals that pretty much anyone this past year. A little detail: on the Champions League final, C-Ron actually missed his penalty. So on a crucial time like that he failed.

I’ll take on point out for that.

So keep the cockyness to yourself and shush just for a little bit. We all know how good you’ve done and the mistakes you’ve made. And yes, we all already know you are taking Ballon D’Or and FIFA Player of the Year.

It happened during the final division II game between America and Ideal, two teams from the state of Minas Gerais, Brazil, who were deciding the state championship and a coveted ascension to the first division state cup
next year. With America already up by one, the referee saw America’s forward Douglas getting clipped from behind inside the box and didnt hesitate…PENALTY SHOT!

But that’s when things got…well…weird you might say.

As he stood by himself facing the goalie and ready to take the penalty shot, America’s forward Euller ran up to the ball and simply rolled it gently to his left. Douglas, standing outside the box along with everyone else, quickly ran in and kicked a low but firm shot into the opposite side of the net as Ideal’s goalie kneeled beaten and some of Ideal’s player raised their arms perplexed and screaming “Hey, you can’t do that???!!”

or can you?

After the game, the experienced forward Euller, 38 years of age, said it was planned all along. He had seen it while playing in Europe and there was no FIFA rule prohibiting the rehearsed shot.

After much publicity on Brazilian networks over the weekend, it remains to be seen if other teams will adopt this irreverent style of
taking penalty kicks.
