Not many. Today was one of these days, and Turkey managed to do miracles again. But let’s start from the beginning. I went to watch Turkey vs. Croatia on a very popular football bar here in NYC. As I found my corner spot on the bar and the match started I could really not tell who was going to win. Croatia seemed a bit more skillful and more likely to win, but little did I know that I was about to experience one of the craziest football matches ever.

The entire first and second halves were extremely physical, with very little skill and a lot of good chances missed. It bugged me a bit to see 2 professional squads missing easy passes and chances.

The crowd around was almost having a heart attack, and for one second there I felt happy that none of the teams on the large screen TVs were Brazil.

And so the match went to overtime… and the same scenario continued to present itself. But then, somehow, what neither of the 2 did in 120 minutes, was done in 2 minutes. Croatia scored with Klasnic after a bad mistake from Turkish goalie Rüştü. The Croatian fans went nuts! The Turkish ones put their heads down thinking that was the end of it.

Isn’t football the best sport ever? You can never predict what will really happen until the referee blows the final whistle.

In the last second of overtime, Şentürk kicked the ball into Croatia’s net. The impossible had just happened. Both team now faced penalty shootouts, not a very happy ending for the Croatians. With the morale up, Turkey converted all their penalties, while Croatia missed 3 out of 4.

End of story. Turkey will now face Germany on the semi-finals on Wednesday. Miracles do happen in football.

And so it ends the Big Phil reign with the Portuguese. Not the ideal “tchau” as a weak Portugal was defeated by a booming Germany. Well deserved for the Germans, and a lot of frustration for the Lusos. Maybe that will bring C. Ronaldo’s cockiness a little bit down, maybe not. But the fact is, he was not able to do anything really significant. Neither could Deco.

Now Scolari is off to boss Chelsea. Who will be the next boss?

Portugal 2 - 3 Germany - goals by Klose, Ballack, Schweinsteiger (for the Germans) and Postiga and Gomes hit the Portuguese goals.

We are all set for the quarter finals. Today’s last 2 matches from the initial EURO 2008 phase defined who will face who.

Greece 1 - 2 Spain - A nice comeback from the Spaniards gave Greece a sour goodbye to the chance of defending the title. This proves how dynamic football is. Greece opened with Charisteas. Spain managed to turn things around with Güiza and Rubén de la Red. Now Spain faces Italy on Sunday.

Russia 2 - 0 Sweden - With a fine performance from Andrei Arshavin. The Russian goals from Arshavin and Pavlyuchenko stamped the ticket to the quarter finals match, against the powerful Oranje this Saturday.

Only the Netherlands was 100% qualified to the quarter finals. Romania needed at least a tie or victory to get into the next phase. Italy and France, repeating 2006 World Cup’s final, needed a victory and Romania to lose in order to qualify. And to make me a little happy, the Italians kept the tradition of beating France (I have to go against the French in football since they manage to kick Brazil’s behind everytime we face them — but I do love Paris!). Results after the jump.

Netherlands 1 - 0 Romania - tough love for the brave Romanians. Persie and Huntelaar scored for the Dutch to keep the Oranje machine running strong. The Italians also say thank you.

France 0 - 2 Italy - Maybe it was the Azzurri’s white uniform, maybe not. Italy played strong and took the opportunity they had. Pirlo scored the first on a penalty (Luca Toni’s credit there) and De Rossi took the little help of Henry’s foot to capitalize the second goal. Italy runs up to the quarters. France says arrevoir.

For those who missed it, here are the latest results for the past 3 days of Euro 2008. We are now into cut-throat phase as victory becomes vital for survival in the EURO championships. My predictions are all on the Netherlands.

Friday, June 13th. Group C matches.

Italy 1 - 1 Romania - I guess the Italian efforts did not pay off. Italy had a legitimate goal canceled and Buffon still managed to save a penalty from the Romanians. Football is sometimes not fair. Now Italy has the rope on their throat and depend on winning the next match against France and hoping for Romania to lose against Netherlands.

Netherlands 4 - 1 France - What an amazing match. France completely dominated by the Orange Machine! The Netherlands is playing amazing football. I haven’t seen that much energy, speed and skill in a long time. Now France also depends (just like Italy) on winning the next match and hoping for a victory of the Netherlands over Romania.

Saturday, June 14th - Group D matches.

Sweden 1 -2 Spain
Greece 0 - 1 Russia - last EURO champions are far from being what they once were…

Sunday, June 15th matched - Group A matches.

Switzerland 2 - 0 Portugal - Big Phil used this match to rest his players and give host Switzerland a chance to shine.

Turkey 3 - 2 Czech Republic - Against all odds (everyone was saying the Czechs were most likely to win the EURO this year), the Turkish men took victory away from the Czech Republic in one minute. Turkey is now into the quarter-finals as the Czech let the spot slip. Very well deserved.
