The Post and the Virgins

Ronaldo? Fred? Adriano? No.
Kleber Pereira, Keirrisson? No.
Marcos, Fabio Costa, Felipe? No.
The main character of Campeonato Brasileiro’s 6th round was the post. It prevented many balls from reaching the back of the net, and had a huge influence in the final scores in 5 out of the 10 matches of the weekend.
In Goiania, the home team hit twice the post of Corinthians’ Felipe. Ernando and Iarley were very close to scoring for Goias, but the final score was 0-0.
In Rio, the zero did not leave the score board of Fluminense and Gremio. However, with just minutes into the match, Tcheco came very close to giving the visitors the victory. The crossing bar, however, did not allow it.
In Porto Alegre, Inter received Vitoria. And, like its two main rivals at the moment (Corinthians because of Copa do Brasil’s final and Gremio) had scoreless match. Vanderson, from Vitoria, is the one got the closest to scoring with a nice long range that landed on the post.
In Sao Paulo, there were goals between the home team and Santo Andre. The 1-1, however, could’ve been a better result for the side of Muricy Ramalho had the post not stopped Borges in the first-half and Washington in the second.
In Recife, the post helped Atletico-PR to pocket its first victory in the tournament. This is so because Sport’s Ciro hit the cross bar with just a few minutes into the match. And later, Rafael Santos scored with a header the only goal of the match.
Talking about first victories, Atletico-PR wasn’t the only club to lose its virginity in this years tournament. The other side of Curitiba did it too. Coritiba thrashed Flamengo with a 5-0, on a day which goalie Bruno and Adriano had horrendous performances. Bruno made, at least, 3 severe mistakes.
In Rio, Botafogo found some happiness with its first victory too. It beat Santos 2-0, goals by Batista and Laio.
Finally, in Barueri, the clash of virginity took place between the home team and Avai. The visitors scored first through a incredible blunder by goalie Renê. But Avai had a defender red carded. Striker Pedrao appeared again. And the title of “the last of the virgins” belongs to Avai. Barueri won 3-1.
But going back to the talk about the post, sometimes, the post can be a friend. In the match between Palmeiras and Cruzeiro, the home team was losing 1-0 when Palmeiras’ Marcao headed the ball against the crossing bar. The rebound touched the line, but the linesman gave the goal anyway. With that, Palmeiras was able to score another 2 through Keirrisson. Final score: 3-1.
New leader
However, all these talks are meaningless for Atletico-MG fans. Under coach Celso Roth and conducted by veteran left back Junior, the club from Minas Gerais reached the 14 points and is the new leader. A very surprising campaign. This weekend’s victim was Nautico, which allowed 3 goals in one match one more time.
