Should Stadiums be renamed?
By Ana on Nov 5, 2007 in 2014 World Cup
Word was out today that Brasileirao Champions, Sao Paulo, were thinking of renaming their current stadium, Morumbi, in order to get it ready to go for the 2014 World Cup in Brazil. The practice is common among big teams like Bayern Munchen, whose stadium became the beautiful Allianz Arena, and for England’s Arsenal, whose home is the Emirates Stadium.
It makes sense that the team doesn’t have enough money to redo an entire stadium, so getting a sponsor would be a blinding success.
I don’t necessarily condemn the switch of naming rights as it builds brand new beautiful stadiums. On Morumbi’s case, everyone knows it is Sao Paulo’s pitch so a change in name would just take time for people to get used to. Whomever chooses to reform the Tricolor home, should be doing a great job and getting great brand exposure. Fans will be able to enjoy a nice brand new stadium.
But do you, as a fan, think that selling naming rights is fine?
