I Gotta Learn to Speak the Language

Ok, so I don’t know a single word of Portuguese. I haven’t had to speak Spanish for at least three years. And I don’t know the first thing about Brazil. So….it looks like I’m going to be pretty lost when I go down to the Cup in 2014. Yep, that’s right. I’m planning my trip now.

You may ask me things like, “Why plan so early?” or “You want to travel the world only to see your mighty USA fail again?” In fact, I do.

I know, I know…it’s true. My United States footballers have not gained a reputation as the most consistent players in the world, but I support them to the final loss each time. What they lack in general consistency, they sure make up for by taking us on a roller-coaster ride every single game. Really, it’s quite impressive that they have come up with so many creative ways to lose a match, ha.

But in all seriousness, my friend and I are very excited about planning our trip to go down and experience the cup firsthand. I have been watching since I was a child and always wanted to go, so one day we were sitting around after the United State’s miserable expulsion from the last tournament when we simply decided we were going to go.

Following our decision several months back, my friend and I became regular readers of See the Cup. He then got the idea that it would great if we could document some of our plans to travel over the next months and years. I suggested we email Ana at the blog and see what she thought. She was kind enough to get some posts from us and see if we can make some magic happen.

We are getting very excited even though our trip is three years away. We have already begun quizzing each other on Portuguese and Spanish phrases hoping that we will have at least some success in getting around. It’s all really quite daunting. It’s going to be my first major trip out of the United States! No better reason to leave home than for football, right?!

We have no idea where this trip is going to take us (other than to Brazil obviously), but I get more and more excited about it every day. We are finally beginning our journey to see Howard, Dempsey, Donavan, Bradley and my number one player Bocanegra try to win one for the United States. If they don’t, I’m sure we’ll at least see an extended run that will end in dismal defeat. Either way, it will be completely worth it.

Hey, a Brazilian speaking: You must be careful because WC2014 could not happen in Brazil. There are many risks when we talk about hotels, airports and STADIUMS. I think it will be a shame for our country and FIFA will have to choose another host.

    Sad but almost true.
