2014 World Cup: Host Cities Miss the First Deadline

The newspaper Folha de S. Paulo reported that the Brazilian cities that will host the 2014 World Cup missed their first deadline. The nine cities that will use tax payers’ money to build stadiums failed to publish the invitation to the bidding process by the final date set by the local organizing committee.
According to the paper, since the 12 cities were chosen, August 31st was the final date for the documents to be turned in. However, the committee decided to push the date to February 10, 2010, as FIFA requires it. The reason? Not all cities were going to be able to produce the paperwork on time.
The newspaper also reports that many cities are having a hard time to simply begin the bidding process because they expected money from private investors to pour in. But that hasn’t happened. Belo Horizonte, Cuiaba, Brasilia, Manaus and Natal were cited as examples of this situation.
Rio de Janeiro, Recife, Salvador and Fortaleza are said to be less late with their processes.
Meanwhile, the local organizing committee set another deadline: the cities have until this Friday to turn in the final projects for the stadiums.
And a reminder: Ricardo Teixeira, when moving forward the bid for Brazil as the hosting nation, promised that public money wasn’t going to be used. Hard to trust.
