Team of the week: Vanuatu
By Ana on Oct 29, 2007 in 2010 World Cup Qualifiers
The point of this website if to give fans a voice. Today I got 3 interesting comments from people from Vanuatu and decided to take a closer look at the team. Vanuatu is part of the OFC (Oceania Football Confederations) and they have finished fourth in the OFC Nations Cup in 1973, 2000, and 2002. Most people don’t remember this, but in the 2004 Oceania Nations Cup, Vanuatu beat New Zealand 4-2, preventing their qualification to the World Cup.
Vanuatu was know as the New Hebrides until 1980, when New Hebrides became the Republic of Vanuatu. The team captain is Etienne Mermer who has had his dream come true and now plays professional football in Australia, for Mitchelton Football Club along with compatriot Richard.
Vanuatu will play New Zealand on November 17th and 21st and holds 131st spot on the FIFA rank: the highest ever held by the team.
This post is to Rino Taaaa’la, who will show me one day football in Vanuatu.
